Julia Nobis is on the January 2014 cover of Vogue Italia – a major international cover coup that’s been a long time coming for Nobis, who kicked off her career in February 2010 as a Calvin Klein Collection runway exclusive at New York Fashion Week.
But Nobis isn’t the only antipodian covering an international edition of the world’s best-known fashion title.
It might not be quite as high profile as its Italian counterpart, nevertheless Vogue is Vogue and two new faces, April Tiplady and Maddison Brown, have scored a tandem front cover of Vogue Portugal’s January 2014 edition.
Shot by Nicole Bentley and styled by Vogue Australia fashion director Christine Centenera, with both models wearing Valentino, the image was not, it seems, shot specifically for Vogue Portugal. It’s an out-take from the new modelling faces spread called ‘Generation Next’ that was published in the October 2013 edition of Vogue Australia.
A great start to 2014 for both.
Both Tiplady and Brown, who are 17 and 16 years old respectively, made their international runway debuts in 2013 at the FW1314 and SS14 seasons. Both were also in high rotation at last April’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. And curiously, in spite of the fact that both are under the David Jones runway age minimum of 18, both also appeared in DJs SS14 showcase in Sydney in July.
Brown has a slight headstart on Tiplady, having first emerged on the Australian modelling scene in early 2012. Although too young to appear at that year’s MBFWA, which now requires models to be at least 16, Brown featured nonetheless in Chic Management’s showcards for that season and appeared off-schedule prior to the event proper at shows such as Life With Bird.
Essentially unseen by the industry, Tiplady was signed to IMG Models worldwide in November 2012 and went on to score a David Sims-lensed editorial in the August issue of Vogue Paris, as well as lookbooks for Alexander McQueen’s McQ diffusion brand and Roberto Cavalli.
