With alumni such as Cassi van den Dungen, Alice Burdeu, Amanda Ware and Montana Cox, the batting average of the Australian edition of Tyra Banks’ Next Top Model franchise in launching actual high fashion careers would appear to be nonpareil.
The original American edition, perhaps ironically, has not proven to be such a great springboard.
As many outside the industry often fail to grasp, modelling is not just about being cookie cutter ‘pretty’. This is most certainly true of the top end of the industry, which favours interesting faces that can lend an ‘edgy’ look to fashion editorial work.
As far as Frockwriter can ascertain few, if any, ANTM winners have gone on to serious high fashion careers.
Twenty one year-old Leila Goldkuhl from Massachusetts may be about to buck the trend.
Goldkuhl placed third in ANTM’s Cycle 19 last year, but has since signed with Next Model Management in Los Angeles and Chic Management in Sydney. Her seven page-long thread on The Fashion Spot charts a raft of post-show work that includes campaigns for Urban Outfitters and Hervé Léger and in Australia, where she has picked up quite some recent work, editorials for RUSSH and Oyster and a campaign for Zu Shoes.
As distinct from the TFS thread of Cycle 19 winner Laura James, which runs all of two pages, with not much of note therein.
Goldkuhl’s TFS fans appear to have missed her sortie on Myer’s runway in Sydney in August, but she was definitely there too.
And now comes the Autumn/Winter 2014 campaign for Sydney label Bless’ed Are The Meek, whose designer Maria Maung evidently doesn’t watch the American show and was oblivious to all the Goldkuhl drama, which saw the latter eliminated from episode five – prompting tears from ANTM’s Givenchy-clad social media correspondent Bryanboy – only to be reinstated in episode nine by public vote and then go on to make the final three.
“We booked her straight off the plane from the USA, we were the first company to use her in Australia the day after she arrived – loved her look and then found out later she was from ANTM” Maung told Frockwriter.
Here’s a first look.
