Charlee Fraser and Rui Dalton by Thom Kerr for Black

Frockwriter is thrilled to bring you a first look at this new editorial and behind-the-scenes video from the latest edition of New Zealand's Black magazine, shot by rising Australian fashion photographer Thom Kerr. The issue has just hit newsstands in NZ.

The eight-page story - entitled "This is not a song it's an outburst" - was shot in and around Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach and stars two other emerging antipodian stars: Charlee Fraser and Rui Dalton.

Both Fraser and Dalton featured earlier this year on Frockwriter, virtually straight out of the starter's gate - Fraser, an indigenous Australian, three weeks after she had been signed by Sydney's eMg Models and Dalton, who boats Serbian and Maori heritage, a fortnight after he had been spotted by Hunter Model Management (before being snapped up by Dally's in Brisbane and Sydney's Chic Management). Both models have since been featured on Models.com.

Kerr shot a total of 48 pages for the special 20th edition of the magazine and one of its six commemorative covers: the Ruby Jean Wilson cover that we previewed last week. Previously published three times a year, Black is about to change to a biannual print format, with a digital-only third edition (and no, it's not a dedicated black culture magazine).

The issue is a milestone for both Black and Kerr, who kicked off his photography career at the magazine's Auckland HQ eight years ago, as an intern, fetching coffee and sweeping floors.

The Gold Coast (Australia) native is now one of Black's two Australian editors, who looks after the Sydney market. And he has since shot for, among many others, KAREN, Remix, Oyster and Curve, with campaigns for Myer Miss Shop, Alice McCall, Jaime Lee Major and Phoenix Keating.

With the debate over runway diversity - or lack thereof - reaching fever pitch in the leadup to the northern hemisphere Spring/Summer 2014 show season (a complaint that has also been levelled at Australia's runways), it's been great to see the emergence of so many new indigenous models down under this year.
